With the J1 schedule taking a break for a couple of weeks, GGOA here takes a quick glance at some 2005 / 2006 J1 stats in relation to the Squirrels' performance and that of the teams relegated from the division in each of those seasons. The current situation is that after thirteen matches, the Squirrels are in 17th place on ten points, having scored eight goals and conceded fifteen.
At the same point in 2006, Avispa Fukuoka, Kyoto Purple Sanga and Cerezo Osaka were the bottom three teams in the division with nine, eight and six points respectively. They were all relegated to J2 at the end of the year. Nagoya Grampus 8 were the team above Fukuoka, on eleven points. Omiya were in 12th position with seventeen points, having scored eighteen and conceded 21.
In 2005 after thirteen games, Omiya were riding high in 8th position with nineteen goals scored and eighteen conceded. The bottom three were FC Tokyo (twelve points), Kashiwa Reysol (eleven) and Vissel Kobe (nine), with the latter two both ending up relegated. Tokyo Verdy 1969 (who at that time were 14th with fourteen points) went down instead of FC Tokyo.
Therefore, since Omiya were promoted to J1 at the end of 2004, only one team have been in the bottom three at this stage in the season and subsequently escaped from relegation.
