Omiya Ardija have announced the signing until the end of this season of a replacement for the recently departed Alison. Salles is a 188cm tall, 29-year-old who has most recently been playing in the US with USL side - i.e. second tier - Atlanta Silverbacks. Salles previously played for other USL teams Puerto Rico Islanders and Montreal Impact, where a fellow member of the squad last year was former Yokohama F Marinos and Albirex Niigata midfielder Masahiro Fusukawa.
Whilst it must be considered good news that the club have acted quickly to re-populate the squad, Salles' lack of top-level experience is a concern bearing in mind the poor record that the Squirrels have in bringing foreign players in to the club. There also is a question mark over whether he actually improves the calibre of the squad. There is no doubt that moving to J1 is the toughest challenge of Salles' career - but from a Squirrels perspective, will he be better than the other bigger, more physical strikers such as Manabu Wakabayashi or Hiroshi Morita?
