All of a sudden, there are shock indications that Omiya Ardija may be moving towards signing a new Brazilian striker. Despite the apparent extension of Gral's contract, it seems likely that a new player will be joining the first team squad for the training camp at Tsumagoi in Gunma prefecture, which begins today, 4th July. All that is currently known about the player is that he is "young" and 1m 86cm tall, but after the club's recent catastrophic dealings in the transfer market, the budget for any new deals is unsurprisingly limited.
Nevertheless, after a poor display against FC Tokyo - after which star Squirrels midfielder Daigo Kobayashi commented that the Tokyo players seemed fitter and better organised than Omiya - it is clear that the squad is in desperate need of a boost from somewhere. One tactical alteration that had been mooted was the possibility of Daigo himself playing a more openly attacking role as effectively a second striker, but the injury to Chikara Fujimoto seems to have thrown cold water on this idea. It is therefore to be hoped that friendlies at Tsumagoi against Thespa Kusatsu (6th) and Albirex Niigata (8th) will help to clarify the way ahead as Omiya seek to get their season back on track.
