Monday 30th saw the Omiya Ardija squad continuing their tough start to pre-season training at the club's Shiki practice ground, with the focus of a two-and-a-half-hour session being the basis of the Squirrels' tactical approach: defensive organisation. "We have to help the players to feel confident about the system that they're being asked to play," said Toshiya Miura, "and because the lead time up to the start of the season is a week shorter than normal, things need to be laid out from Day One to the new members of the squad."
In the main practice game, the defensive line-up of a notional first team was Yasuhiro Hato on the right-hand side, Toninho and Seiichiro Okuno in the middle with Yukio Tsuchiya on the left. Daigo Kobayashi, Yoshiyuki Kobayashi and Naoya Saeki all took up positions in the midfield, tackling with gusto in a lively match. Chikara Fujimoto later commented, "The new players have good attacking ability, so that's the kind of thing that's going to have a positive impact upon the defence as well - it helps throughout the team, although we all know that a sound defence is at the heart of things. That's what we're going to need if we want to achieve our goal of a top seven finish for the season ahead."
