Omiya Ardija rounded off September with a feeble display on Saturday, when they were second best for the full ninety minutes in every area. As expected, coach Yasuhiro Higuchi dealt wit the absence of leading scorer Denis Marques by using Chikara Fujimoto to partner Klemen Lavric, introducing Tomoya Uchida into midfield. Captain Yoshiyuki Kobayashi was named as a substitute following a month out with injury.
But in a crucial J1 match, the Squirrels' build-up play was lethargic, their tackling half-hearted and they offered absolutely no threat up front. Visitors Vissel Kobe were hardly an impressive side, but Ardija's dazed performance made them look good through an apparent inability to do just about anything right. Kobe took the lead on twelve minutes when Botti hammered a left-foot rocket past Koji Ezumi's outstretched arm and into the top corner. Omiya got caught in possession for the goal and there was no apparent attempt to retrieve the ball from any of the home team's players.
The rest of the first half slipped sleepily past, with Lavric spurning two decent opportunities to equalise - for the first, Vissel keeper Tatsuya Enomoto turned his shot round the post for a corner and not long afterwards the Slovenian placed a header over the bar after a decent cross from Fujimoto. Ardija started poorly in the second half and went another goal behind down after just two minutes when experienced Takayuki Yoshida bundled in from close range. Leandro caused the Squirrels' defence a lot of trouble and despite the addition of Kohei Tokita and Hiroshi Morita Omiya created no other chances worthy of the name.
