As Steve has pointed out, Omiya Ardija have in their two first practice matches of 2008 scored exactly the same number of goals as they did in the whole of last season's J1 campaign. With last weekend's 6-0 defeat of a Squirrels youth side followed on Saturday by an 18-0 annihiliation of a Guam national XI, astonishingly Omiya have notched up 24 goals in just 180 minutes of football.
What makes this a yet more remarkable statistic is that arguably the team's most gifted player, Denis Marques, would appear to have been sidelined through injury and has not featured in either game. And while the new signings from university teams all featured against the Young Squirrels, they have not yet joined the rest of the squad on Guam.
